ABOUT GDANSK:
There is no other city like Gdańsk.
This city is one of a kind – you may feel it by going a little bit further on to Sopot or Gdynia (as Gdańsk is a part of a Tricity composed of the three towns mentioned above) so that you could notice the slight change in the atmosphere, which is so specific for Gdańsk. It is a very old town having its beginning before the christening of Poland. History rolled over it more than once and more than once it had its suzerains changed – subject to both German and Polish rule. But they were not the only citizens living in that region of Pomerania – Gdańsk being the biggest port in that area of the Baltic Sea has always been a melting pot composed of many nationalities and cultures that influenced deeply on its look and atmosphere. It happened twice that it became a Free City getting quite unusual for a town status of autonomy.
It is worth popping in to Gdańsk just to see the famous Długa Street with Neptune fountain and its beautiful houses from the time of the Hanseatic League, catch a sight of charming Mariacka Street where amber jewlery shines like gold on its houses front stairs, and also visit the maybe less known corners where you could be led by luck or a true admirer of Gdańsk
However, Gdańsk is not only a place of old monuments – it is also a city of people. And it gave birth to such big individualities as Günter Grass, Artur Schopenhauer, Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit and of course Lech Wałęsa. It was in Gdańsk where events of August 1980 happened, it was Gdańsk that led Poland to freedom. Well, finally it used to be named “free city”…
But… Gdańsk is also a town where you can party! Party really well! In the old town you may find many pubs, restaurants and night clubs where you could spend your time happily while drinking delicious Polish beer. It is recommended to visit museums and galeries being placed around, to sit under parasols in front of lovely cafes on Długa Street, and when the weather is fine to go to the beach and listen to the sound of the sea…
